2007 Reports and Results
Shadow UK Open Championship- Netley Sailing Club (ASA)
28-30th September.
Growing fleet produces superb one design racing. 14 Shadows enjoyed very competitive one design racing at their Nationals, extremely well organized by PRO David Henshall and the team at Netley. Friday’s gusty F4-5 saw race 1 start with Olympic gold medalist and the boat’s designer, Yves Loday, amongst others, shoot off to the left of the first beat, only to find themselves buried at the windward mark with the fleet lead by Phil Neal. As they fought their way back through, Yves got in front, being chased hard by Phil, Olly Harris, David Lowe and Robin Leather. Yves won the race, with everyone wondering whether the French master was beatable. The answer nearly came in race 2, as first Tim Swinburn did an impressive wipe out when leading, then Olly Harris passed Yves downwind and built a healthy led, only to capsize at the final leeward mark. Phil Neal put up a good fight, but Yves eventually won. Team Gurnard started to assert themselves with Robin 3rd, Mike Martin 4th and Carl Blenkinsop 5th. Race 3 was more of the same, with plenty of spectacular capsizes to keep the race committee entertained. After places constantly changing, Phil Neal won this race, with Robin second and Laurie Gustar starting to show his potential until a capsize. At the evening meal, the day’s Doh! award went to David Lowe for bumping into (with himself not his boat) a huge yellow ship’s mooring buoy! Friday night’s “Bandaoke” saw the sailors (even the Shearwater ones) out-sung by the Netley club members. Saturday’s light breezes produced less excitement but incredibly close racing all down the fleet, with Tim Swinburn, back on a Shadow for the first time this year, winning the first two races. Mike Martin lead race 2 until he found a big hole and Olly, Yves, Robin, Phil and Laurie fought it out for the next places, with finishes often separated by only a second or two. The last race saw Yves Loday with a good lead and the rest of the fleet fighting the tide. The day’s Doh! award went to Olly Harris for having to do two 360s in one day whilst the food and evening in the bar lived up to Netley’s reputation Sunday produced a different wind direction and more breeze than Saturday. Once again, the battle for the top 4 places was very close, Tim just winning race 7 from Olly with Yves, Robin and David Brief right behind. In the final race, Tim and Olly fought a close battle, until Olly found stronger breeze on the last lap and pulled away. This left a photo finish between Tim and Yves and a close race for the next places. Overall, victory went to Yves, only separated by 3 points to second place with 3rd and 4th tied on points. Most improved went to Jacques Devaux and the Race Officer’s award for the best pitchpole went to Laurie Gustar. The final Doh! award went to Graham Tomlin for leaving the beach with his stern blocks attached! Netley put on a great event at a great venue. Next year’s Shadow Nationals will be with the Spitfire and Hurricane classes at Brightlingsea on 26th-28th September 2008, including Reg White’s retirement party, making it a really special event. Next event is the huge Grafham Cat Open on October 20-21st. 1st (10 points) Yves Loday (CNBPP) 2nd (13 points) Olly Harris (Weston SC) 3rd (18 points) Tim Swinburn (Grafham Water SC) 4th (18 points) Robin Leather (Gurnard SC) East Coast Piers Race Overall, although equal on points for the
weekend, Ian's win in the double-points Colne Point race meant that he won his
first Shadow event. With 3 events so far and 3 different winners, there is all
to play for at the next event, Stokes Bay on 8/9th September. North Devon YC, Instow.
9&10th Jun Rutland Water: 19/20 May Eleven Shadows gathered at Rutland for the first TT event of the season including visitors from Cornwall and the Isle of Wight. The aim was a day of training led by Tim Swinburne to be followed by racing. Conditions were not ideal for the training with a F4/5 with some very big gusts giving some exciting sailing. The wind gods were at their most impish as Sunday saw real drifter conditions but nevertheless the RO did brilliantly and managed to get three races in. The light conditions with some periods of flat calm, big holes and big shifts made for something of a lottery with boats pulling out 400 yard leads being swallowed up as the wind died for them and picked up elsewhere. It is a rare sight to see boats 20 yards on a “beat” with one flying his kite!! Local sailor, David Lowe proved master of the conditions and won the event. Robin Leather of Gurnard made an impressive debut in the class wining the first race and taking second place overall with David Brief of Grafham in third. Mark Aldridge of Grafham also managed a win in his first TT which made his weekend. All very enjoyable in spite of the conditions. (First: David Lowe (Rutland); Second: Robin Leather (Gurnard); Third: David Brief (GWSC); Fourth: Phil Neal (Rutland)
Results table 2007 There are 5 events in the Series, with 3 to count to the overall result. At the East Coast Piers Race weekend, the Colne Point race contributes double points to the overall result for that weekend.
